AMD’s MI450 Chip Series Chosen for OpenAI’s New One-Gigawatt AI Facility

AMD’s forthcoming MI450 series of chips has received a monumental endorsement, having been chosen by OpenAI to power a new one-gigawatt AI facility slated to begin construction next year. This selection is a key component of a broader, multibillion-dollar partnership set to accelerate OpenAI’s research and development capabilities.
The new facility represents the first phase of a massive hardware deployment. The full agreement covers the delivery of hundreds of thousands of AMD GPUs over several years, culminating in a total of six gigawatts of computing power. This immense capacity is critical for OpenAI to continue its pioneering work in creating large-scale, sophisticated AI models.
The partnership marks a watershed moment for AMD, which has been aggressively working to capture a larger share of the lucrative AI hardware market. The choice of its next-generation MI450 series by the world’s most prominent AI company serves as a powerful validation of its technology roadmap. This confidence was reflected on Wall Street, where AMD’s market cap jumped by $80 billion.
Beyond the hardware, the alliance is fortified by a unique financial arrangement. OpenAI has been granted a warrant to purchase a 10% stake in AMD, ensuring the two companies’ interests are closely aligned. This structure encourages a deeper level of collaboration on software and hardware optimization for future AI workloads.
As OpenAI moves forward with its giga-scale data center, the industry will be watching closely. The success of this facility, powered by AMD’s latest silicon, could significantly shift the dynamics of the AI chip market and establish a new benchmark for the infrastructure required to lead in the age of artificial intelligence.
