Amid Gaza Crisis, US and UK Split on Diplomatic Path Forward

As the crisis in Gaza continues unabated, the US and UK have revealed a significant split on the diplomatic path forward. The division was made plain on Thursday when President Donald Trump, visiting London, stated his opposition to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state.
Trump downplayed the rift, calling it “one of our few disagreements,” but it points to a substantial difference in strategy. The UK sees recognition as a tool to build momentum for a two-state solution, especially with Israel continuing its ground incursion into Gaza City. The US, however, remains opposed, as shown by its recent negative vote at the UN.
Prime Minister Starmer confirmed the difference in tactics but stressed unity in purpose. He told reporters he and Trump “absolutely agree” on the need for a peace roadmap to alleviate the “intolerable” suffering. His government’s view is that Palestinian statehood is a crucial step on that road, not a final destination.
To avoid inflaming the disagreement, the UK is reportedly postponing its official recognition until after Trump’s visit concludes. Starmer also made clear that his vision of a Palestinian state has no place for Hamas in its leadership, a condition aimed at building international consensus for the UK’s independent diplomatic track.
