President Donald Trump has laid out his vision for Ukraine’s future security: a framework led by European nations with support from the United States. He shared this vision after discussing it with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This policy articulation followed a series of key meetings, including an August 18 session at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies. The purpose of these talks was to solidify a path towards a secure Ukraine.
While admitting that the details have not been finalized, Trump was clear about the roles he envisions. “Europe is going to give them significant security guarantees,” he said, defining the American contribution as “backup.”
The President also provided insight into his broader dialogue with Russia. He mentioned a separate meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15, where they explored the potential for reducing their countries’ nuclear stockpiles once the Ukraine war is over.
