Moscow – In a move that significantly raises the stakes of the Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has directly linked the potential supply of U.S. Tomahawk missiles to a “qualitatively new stage of escalation.” His statement is a clear and dangerous gambit aimed at deterring further Western military aid.
Putin explained his position by stating that the use of such sophisticated missiles would be “impossible” without the direct involvement of U.S. military personnel. This, in the Kremlin’s view, would amount to a direct act of aggression by Washington and would shatter their diplomatic relationship.
This stark warning came as Putin also celebrated his military’s recent successes. He informed his top commanders that Russian forces had captured nearly 5,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2025, securing what he termed the “complete strategic initiative.”
While the world’s attention was drawn to this high-stakes rhetoric, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted a different kind of threat. He accused Russia of using its oil tanker fleet not just for commerce, but for “reconnaissance and even sabotage activities.”
Zelenskyy projected confidence in dealing with this issue, revealing that Kyiv is working closely with its allies to find a solution. He affirmed his belief that it is “entirely possible to stop” Russia’s alleged use of civilian ships for military purposes.
