Mac users face a notable change in their ChatGPT experience. The voice interaction feature within the macOS desktop app will be discontinued starting January 15, 2026. OpenAI described this decision in official update notes as part of efforts to create more cohesive voice experiences across platforms.
The removal is exclusive to the Mac desktop application. Voice capabilities continue functioning normally through the ChatGPT website, which works on any browser, as well as through mobile applications on iOS and Android. Windows desktop users also maintain their voice functionality. Mac is the only desktop platform affected.
OpenAI hasn’t elaborated extensively on the Mac-specific reasoning. The company’s focus on unified experiences suggests the current Mac app’s technical foundation may not support future voice development plans. As voice becomes a more prominent interface for AI services, ensuring consistency across platforms grows increasingly critical.
Users who have built voice into their routines will need to adjust. People depending on voice for accessibility needs, individuals using hands-free interaction for productivity, or those conducting lengthy verbal exchanges with ChatGPT will all experience disruption. Web or mobile alternatives provide options but may require workflow modifications.
Technology experts generally believe this is temporary rather than permanent. OpenAI’s ongoing investment in voice technology across its product line suggests Mac users will eventually receive improved capabilities. The current removal likely enables infrastructure work that will eventually deliver enhanced features.
