Zelensky Says US Proposes Rapid Peace Track with Miami Talks and June Target

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that the United States wants the Russia-Ukraine war concluded by June and has proposed hosting peace talks in Miami next week. This announcement indicates accelerated American efforts to facilitate a diplomatic resolution.
Speaking to reporters in comments publicized early Saturday, Zelensky disclosed that this would be the first time Washington has offered to host Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams on American soil. The proposal demonstrates the US government’s willingness to play a more direct and visible role in mediating between the adversaries. “The United States has proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams — Ukraine and Russia — meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week’s time,” Zelensky explained.
These forthcoming talks would represent the third round of US-facilitated negotiations, following two sessions already conducted in Abu Dhabi beginning in January. The Abu Dhabi meetings achieved one significant success—a major prisoner exchange—but made no headway on territorial issues. Russia currently occupies about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory and is insisting on both formal recognition of this occupation and additional territorial control in the eastern Donetsk region.
Kyiv has consistently and firmly opposed any territorial concessions, arguing that sovereign territory cannot be negotiated away regardless of military circumstances. Russian officials have stated that territorial demands are essential to any peace agreement and have warned of renewed military offensives if negotiations do not yield satisfactory outcomes. This fundamental disagreement on borders and sovereignty continues to prevent substantive progress toward peace.
The diplomatic push occurs against a backdrop of continued violence. In a video posted Saturday, Zelensky reported that Russian forces had launched attacks against infrastructure critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations during the previous night. The strikes forced multiple nuclear reactor units to reduce their power output, with one reactor shutting down automatically. Zelensky denounced the attacks as unprecedented terrorism and demanded that Russia prove its negotiating sincerity by ceasing strikes on essential civilian infrastructure.
