Horror Excellence: ‘Weapons’ Begins Indian Streaming Run on JioHotstar

Zach Cregger’s “Weapons” has officially arrived on JioHotstar, delivering one of 2025’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful horror films to Indian streaming audiences. The thriller features compelling work from Julia Garner and Josh Brolin in roles that demonstrate their considerable dramatic abilities, and the film’s theatrical run generated over $269 million in worldwide revenue while earning recognition as one of the year’s most skillfully executed genre entries.
The streaming release addresses significant demand from Indian viewers who have been anticipating access to this cultural phenomenon. JioHotstar announced the film’s availability through Instagram, sharing atmospheric scenes accompanied by the caption: “Everyone’s looking for answers while evil lurks in the town of Maybrook.” This digital premiere allows the film to continue finding new audiences and maintains its cultural relevance beyond the theatrical window.
The narrative foundation of “Weapons” is a scenario that resonates with universal fears about child safety and community vulnerability. In Maybrook, seventeen children simultaneously abandon their beds during the night, running into darkness in what appears to be a coordinated disappearance. This mass vanishing transforms the town overnight from a place of trust and safety into a community consumed by paranoia and the desperate need for answers. Cregger’s direction maintains constant tension while using the premise to explore how tragedy can reveal the darkness that exists beneath civilized society.
Julia Garner anchors the film with a performance that showcases her ability to convey complex, conflicting emotions simultaneously. As the school teacher who becomes the target of community blame, she must navigate an environment where former friends view her with suspicion and anger. Her portrayal captures both the strength required to maintain dignity in the face of false accusations and the vulnerability of someone experiencing profound grief. The supporting ensemble—Josh Brolin, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan—matches her intensity, creating believable characters whose responses to trauma feel authentic and grounded.
The production’s journey to the screen involved its own dramatic narrative. When the script entered the market in January 2023, it triggered a high-stakes bidding war between major studios. New Line Cinema emerged victorious with a $38 million offer that exceeded Universal’s competing bid by $7 million, denying Jordan Peele the opportunity to produce the project. This substantial investment demonstrated remarkable foresight when “Weapons” grossed $269 million globally, establishing itself as 2025’s second-most-successful horror film after Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” which earned $366.7 million worldwide. The film’s performance has validated New Line’s aggressive strategy and confirmed Cregger’s emergence as a major creative force in horror cinema.
