Women Face Higher Risk of Dry Eye Disease, Study Reveals

Persistent dry, itchy, or burning eyes could indicate dry eye disease rather than just fatigue or prolonged screen time. This condition impacts comfort, vision, and everyday activities, with women being particularly susceptible due to hormonal changes, aging, and certain health conditions. The disease arises when the eyes fail to produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly, leading to irritation and symptoms like burning, redness, and blurred vision. Interestingly, watery eyes can also be a sign, as excessive dryness triggers reflex tears that may not effectively lubricate the eyes.

Women face a higher risk of dry eye disease largely due to hormonal fluctuations throughout life, such as during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause, which can affect tear production. Age-related changes in natural tear production also contribute to this risk. Additionally, lifestyle factors like prolonged screen use can exacerbate the problem by reducing blink frequency, leading to increased tear evaporation and discomfort. Certain medical conditions, including diabetes and autoimmune disorders, along with medications like antihistamines and antidepressants, may further increase the likelihood of experiencing dry eye symptoms.

Environmental conditions such as air conditioning, fans, and windy weather can worsen dry eye symptoms, which vary among individuals. Common signs include burning, stinging, redness, a gritty sensation, excessive watering, light sensitivity, eye fatigue, blurred vision, and difficulty wearing contact lenses. These symptoms often become more apparent during extended screen use or in dry, windy, or air-conditioned environments. Implementing simple protective measures can help alleviate discomfort, such as following the 20-20-20 rule—looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—and ensuring regular blinking during screen use.

To further protect eye health, managing environmental factors is essential, like avoiding direct airflow from fans or air conditioners and using protective eyewear outdoors. Staying hydrated, getting sufficient sleep, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, and nuts also support eye comfort. Despite these measures, if symptoms persist, consulting an eye-care professional is advisable. They can diagnose dry eye disease and recommend treatments such as lubricating eye drops, warm compresses, or other specific therapies based on the condition’s cause and severity.

Recognizing and addressing dry eye symptoms early can prevent ongoing discomfort and improve the ability to engage in activities like reading, driving, and using digital devices comfortably. Those with health conditions affecting eye health should be especially vigilant about persistent symptoms, as early intervention can significantly enhance quality of life.
