Russia Accused by Germany of Drone Strike at Leipzig Airport

Germany has accused Russia of orchestrating a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, marking it as part of a broader campaign of hybrid warfare intended to destabilize the nation and inflict serious damage. Authorities allege that the Russian state supplied the necessary equipment and expertise for the attempted assault, with lower-level operatives recruited to execute it. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul underscored these findings.

The incident occurred on August 4 when a drone equipped with explosives was discovered within the airport’s security zone, near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane used for transporting weapons to Ukraine. Although the explosive device did not detonate, German officials indicated that it had the potential to cause significant destruction. Subsequent investigations revealed traces of military-grade hexogen explosives near the airport, as well as the discovery of another drone, though initial beliefs of a second drone’s involvement have been reconsidered.

In response to the incident, Germany announced a series of retaliatory measures against Russia. These include the imposition of new sanctions, stringent controls on Russian nationals entering Germany, and targeted restrictions on individuals linked to Russia’s activities. Additionally, Berlin plans to take steps against Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which is involved in transporting Russian oil and other commodities. Germany is also backing a new European Union sanctions package aimed at Russian-linked companies and organizations.

Foreign Minister Wadephul emphasized that Germany is not at war with Russia but is increasingly becoming a target of hybrid warfare tactics, such as alleged sabotage, disinformation, and destabilization efforts. European and NATO partners have expressed solidarity with Germany, stressing that such attacks cannot go unanswered and calling for a unified response to the escalating hybrid threats from Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the accusations and criticized the proposed sanctions as detrimental to Germany’s interests.

The German government has briefed its NATO and European allies on the findings of the investigation and the planned countermeasures. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged Germany’s evidence pointing to Moscow’s involvement, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured continued support for Berlin. The incident at Leipzig has further strained German-Russian relations, already at historic lows following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. German officials warn that this may be part of a larger pattern of Russian-linked activities across Europe, involving sabotage and other security threats, which are currently under investigation in several countries.
