US Removes Restrictions on Mexican Airlines Following Airport Access Deal

The United States has lifted restrictions on Mexican airlines, a move that follows significant progress in resolving a dispute over airport access and air transport operations between the two nations. The US Department of Transportation announced the immediate revocation of measures that were imposed last year, citing alleged violations of a 2015 bilateral air transport agreement.

The restrictions had led to the cancellation of 13 routes and limited operations at Mexico’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). The dispute arose after Mexico altered airport slot allocations for US airlines and mandated that cargo operators relocate from Mexico City International Airport to AIFA. The US argued these changes violated the bilateral agreement and increased operational costs for American companies.

Negotiations between the two countries intensified in recent months, culminating in an agreement in May. As part of the settlement, Mexico committed to ensuring US airlines have fair access to operating slots at Mexico City International Airport. This agreement was a crucial step towards the resolution of the ongoing conflict.

Mexican authorities have welcomed the US decision, viewing it as a significant step toward enhancing air connectivity and expanding flight routes and frequencies between the two countries. The lifting of these restrictions opens up new opportunities for airlines to develop services between Mexico City International Airport, AIFA, and the US market.
