Anthropic Boosts AI Policy Budget to $40 Million Over Safety Worries

Anthropic has boosted its financial support to Public First Action, a bipartisan advocacy organization, with an additional $20 million donation dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence transparency, safety, and public education. This latest contribution raises the AI company’s total funding for the group to $40 million. The decision to increase funding underscores the growing unease surrounding the swift progress of AI technologies, such as Anthropic’s own Claude Mythos model, and the potential dangers they might present if misused. The company clarified that the funds are designated exclusively for public education and AI policy efforts, with no allowance for backing political candidates.

The announcement comes amid a heated debate in the United States about the appropriate regulation of advanced AI technologies. Anthropic has advocated for stronger safeguards, warning that highly capable AI systems could threaten critical infrastructure, including hospitals, power grids, and financial networks, if they fall into the wrong hands. Coinciding with this announcement is the release of the Claude Mythos Preview, an advanced AI model with a focus on cybersecurity, now available to selected users within government, technology, and financial sectors.

In the face of these concerns, Anthropic has urged for more stringent oversight of powerful AI systems, proposing mandatory independent testing and enhanced government authority to prevent the release of models that do not meet safety standards. CEO Dario Amodei has also pushed for tougher export controls on advanced AI chips and strategies to stop foreign entities from replicating leading U.S. technologies.

Nonetheless, some competitors argue that imposing tighter regulations could hinder innovation and diminish the United States’ global competitiveness, particularly against countries like China. Despite these differing viewpoints, the discussion over AI regulation continues to gain traction, especially as the U.S. midterm elections approach, spotlighting artificial intelligence as a crucial policy and national security topic.
