SpaceX has had to delay the launch of its Starship rocket due to an engine issue that emerged just before liftoff. The planned launch, set to take place at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas, was interrupted when several engines did not ignite as expected. This failure prompted the automatic abort system to activate, leading the company to begin the process of defueling the rocket.
The company aims to attempt another launch in the coming days, pending a thorough investigation into the engine malfunction. Starship plays a pivotal role in Elon Musk’s vision to grow the Starlink satellite network, establish infrastructure in space, and ultimately transport humans to the Moon and Mars.
This launch was anticipated to be Starship’s first significant test flight since SpaceX’s recent public stock offering. The delay, however, impacted the company’s financial standing, with shares dropping over 6 percent during early trading following the announcement.
SpaceX has invested more than $15 billion in developing the Starship, which is designed to be fully reusable. Additionally, the company holds contracts with NASA to employ Starship for upcoming lunar missions. Nonetheless, several technical hurdles must be overcome before the spacecraft can safely transport astronauts.
