US, Saudi Forces Target Iran-Backed Militias in Iraq as Tensions Rise

In a significant military move, the United States and Saudi Arabia launched joint strikes on Iran-backed militia positions in Iraq, marking a response to escalating regional tensions. The military action comes after a series of regional assaults raised alarm across the Middle East, with the US military successfully intercepting Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at American forces, thereby averting potential damage to a US military base in Jordan.

Washington has issued a stern warning, indicating that any further attacks targeting US personnel or Saudi energy infrastructure will provoke additional military responses. The coordinated strikes specifically targeted sites associated with Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), reportedly resulting in the deaths of at least 20 militia members and injuring several others.

Compounding the tension, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced the interception of three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, citing violations of Iranian regulations. This development has added to global energy supply concerns and contributed to a rise in Brent crude oil prices, underscoring the fragile nature of regional stability.

The resurgence of hostilities comes after a brief lull in conflict, casting a shadow over the stability of the region. In response, Iraq has initiated an investigation into recent drone attacks, while Iranian-backed militia groups have denied any involvement. These events highlight the growing security risks in the Gulf region and threaten the safety of key international shipping routes.
