Mexico Pushes Forward with USMCA Review as US Threatens New Tariffs

Mexico has initiated its first annual review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) amid efforts to alleviate rising trade tensions with the United States, particularly concerning the possibility of new tariffs. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum plans to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Mexico City following a series of technical discussions held between officials from both countries. These discussions occur as U.S. President Donald Trump considers the imposition of additional tariffs on imports from more than 60 nations, including Mexico.

During a recent briefing to U.S. lawmakers, Greer expressed optimism about reaching provisional agreements on the USMCA before the conclusion of 2026. However, he noted that negotiations surrounding more intricate issues, such as rules of origin, labor standards, and environmental commitments, are anticipated to extend through 2027. These complex topics are critical to ensuring the trade agreement’s efficacy and longevity.

The United States is advocating for stricter rules of origin within the USMCA framework. The intent is to guarantee that products benefiting from the agreement are genuinely manufactured within North America, rather than being merely routed through Mexico from other countries. This push aligns with broader U.S. efforts to bolster domestic manufacturing and secure supply chains.

As trade discussions progress, both nations aim to strike a balance between economic cooperation and the enforcement of stringent trade regulations. The outcome of these negotiations will likely have significant implications for the economic relationships within North America, particularly as both countries seek to navigate the complexities of international trade policies.
