Trading Opens for 911.5 Million SpaceX Shares, Pressuring Stock Value

SpaceX is bracing for potential market turbulence as a substantial 911.5 million shares become eligible for trading. This development offers certain employees and early investors the chance to sell shares acquired prior to the company’s highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO). The stock experienced a nearly 14% drop on Wednesday, closing at $108.27. This marks the second-largest single-day decline for SpaceX shares, leaving them about 20% below the IPO price of $135. This significant decrease comes just weeks after SpaceX made its debut on the public market.

Initially, SpaceX offered only a limited portion of its total shares for public trading, which created a restricted supply and subsequently fueled strong demand post-IPO. The upcoming release of shares is expected to significantly increase the number available to investors, potentially causing short-term volatility in the market. However, it’s important to note that the availability of these 911.5 million shares does not necessarily mean all will be sold immediately. Employees and early investors have the option to hold onto their shares or sell them, with those having acquired shares at lower pre-IPO valuations potentially more inclined to take profits.

SpaceX has opted for a staggered schedule to release restricted shares rather than adhering to a traditional single lock-up period. This approach means that additional shares could be released later in the year, potentially adding billions more Class A shares to the trading pool. Notably, Elon Musk and other top executives face a longer restriction period, meaning their shares remain locked up for longer than those in the current release. Musk’s holdings are a significant part of SpaceX’s overall value, making future executive share unlocks a critical factor for investors to consider.

Moreover, the increased number of publicly tradable shares could impact SpaceX’s weighting in the Nasdaq-100 index. Currently, its weighting stands at about 1%, but this could rise to above 3.5%, depending on the stock price and the volume of shares available at the next index adjustment. Despite the potential for short-term selling pressure due to the share unlock, the underlying fundamentals of SpaceX’s business remain unchanged. Investors are likely to continue focusing on the company’s financial performance, growth prospects, investments in artificial intelligence, and the execution of its long-term strategic plans.
