Mexico Demands Probes into Migrant Deaths in US Immigration Actions

In a recent announcement, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that Mexico plans to formally urge US authorities to initiate criminal investigations into the deaths of Mexican migrants in immigration detention or during enforcement operations. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, which occurred amidst an immigration operation. The Mexican government has expressed significant concern over this incident, emphasizing the need for accountability.

Since the most recent US immigration crackdown commenced, 17 Mexican nationals have reportedly lost their lives, with 14 dying in detention and three during enforcement activities. In response, Mexico intends to reach out to US federal and state authorities, including the Department of Justice, pressing them to consider criminal proceedings where warranted. The aim, as stated by President Sheinbaum, is to seek justice and uphold the rights of Mexican citizens while carefully balancing diplomatic ties with the United States.

The call for investigations highlights ongoing tensions between the two nations regarding immigration enforcement and security cooperation. Mexican officials are pushing for these matters to be addressed comprehensively, reflecting broader concerns over how Mexican citizens are treated during US immigration operations.

President Sheinbaum’s announcement underscores a critical diplomatic move, aiming to protect the well-being of Mexican citizens and ensure that their rights are respected. The Mexican government is adamant about seeking clarity and justice for the deaths of its citizens, striving to maintain a productive relationship with the US while advocating for accountability in these tragic cases.
