8 Causes of Shoulder Pain Beyond Frozen Shoulder

Persistent shoulder pain can significantly affect daily life, making tasks like dressing, reaching, or sleeping difficult. While frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a well-known cause of such discomfort, it is not the sole condition responsible. Identifying the specific cause is crucial, as different shoulder issues may require different treatments.

Frozen shoulder occurs when the shoulder joint’s capsule becomes thick and tight, leading to restricted movement and pain. However, other conditions such as tendon injuries, arthritis, and nerve problems can present similar symptoms. A key distinction between frozen shoulder and other issues is the movement limitation. In frozen shoulder, the arm’s movement is restricted both independently and when assisted by someone else, whereas a rotator cuff injury may allow more movement when another person assists.

There are several potential causes of shoulder pain beyond frozen shoulder. Rotator cuff injuries, which involve the muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder, can lead to pain and difficulty in arm movement. Shoulder arthritis, resulting from wear and tear, can cause joint stiffness and reduced movement. Calcific tendinitis, characterized by calcium deposits in the tendons, can cause sudden and intense pain. Nerve issues in the neck can also manifest as shoulder pain, often accompanied by tingling or numbness.

Other possible causes include labral injuries or shoulder instability, which may cause a slipping sensation or clicking during movement. Problems with the acromioclavicular joint, where the collarbone meets the shoulder, may lead to pain during certain arm movements. Fractures or dislocations from injuries can result in severe pain and visible deformity, necessitating immediate medical attention. Infections or inflammatory conditions might also cause severe pain with additional symptoms like fever or swelling.

Patients experiencing persistent or worsening shoulder pain should seek medical advice to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Diagnostic evaluations, such as imaging or tests, may be necessary. In cases of severe injury or symptoms like fever and swelling, urgent medical care is essential.

Managing shoulder health involves avoiding forced movements and unadvised exercises until a diagnosis is made. Some conditions may benefit from guided physical therapy, while others might need alternative treatments. Recognizing that persistent shoulder pain isn’t always due to frozen shoulder can lead to more effective care and recovery.
