Etihad Stadium Witnesses Another City Stalemate

The Etihad Stadium was the venue for Manchester City’s third consecutive Premier League draw on Wednesday as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a 1-1 result. The champions now find themselves five points behind Arsenal, who face Liverpool on Thursday.
Erling Haaland gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot four minutes before halftime. The Norwegian converted after VAR upheld the referee’s decision that Diego Gomez had fouled Jeremy Doku inside the penalty area. The goal represented Haaland’s 150th for Manchester City, ended his three-match scoring drought, and took him to 20 Premier League goals for the season.
City almost doubled their lead early in the second period when Bernardo Silva pounced on a Brighton defensive mistake, but his shot cannoned off the post. Tensions flared when City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper became involved in a confrontation, with both players receiving yellow cards.
Brighton restored parity in the 60th minute through a well-crafted goal from Kaoru Mitoma. The Japanese winger collected a pass from wide, positioned himself expertly at the edge of the box, and curled a low shot into the far corner with excellent technique.
After equalizing, Brighton took control of the match, dictating the tempo and creating several opportunities to claim all three points. Mitoma was instrumental in their best chance, setting up Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s finish was blocked by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s follow-up effort from a tight angle struck the post. City had one final opportunity to claim victory when Haaland found himself alone against Verbruggen in stoppage time, but the Brighton goalkeeper’s superb save preserved the draw.
