Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has committed to ramping up his campaign efforts following a narrow defeat to Flávio Bolsonaro in the first round of the presidential election. With nearly all ballots counted, Bolsonaro garnered approximately 47% of the vote, while Lula received 45%, setting the stage for a runoff on October 25.
Lula expressed surprise at the first-round outcome and called on the more than 30 million voters who abstained to engage in the second round. He emphasized the importance of participation and highlighted his political experience as a key factor that distinguishes him from Bolsonaro, who is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Lula also criticized Bolsonaro over allegations related to organized crime and corruption.
In outlining his strategy for the runoff, Lula stated that his campaign would prioritize education, research, technology, and industrial development. He promised continued investment in universities and federal institutes, as well as an expansion of the Pé-de-Meia program, which aims to reduce school dropout rates.
The upcoming campaign is anticipated to focus on attracting voters who supported candidates eliminated in the first round and those who abstained. Lula’s appeal to voters centers on his vision for Brazil’s future and his critique of his opponent’s record.
