Trump Unveils New Oil Deal Between US and Venezuela

In a significant development, US President Donald Trump announced a new oil agreement that grants the United States a “majority” control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves. This deal, reached through a collaboration with private businesses involving senior US officials, is positioned as advantageous for both American and Venezuelan populations. However, the specifics regarding which companies are involved, the exact oil fields in question, and the structure of the US control over these reserves remain undisclosed.

Venezuela is home to the world’s largest proven oil reserves, estimated at approximately 303 billion barrels, despite its energy sector having faced years of decline. The current oil production in the country is about 1.25 million barrels of crude per day. This agreement aligns with Washington’s efforts to boost the flow of Venezuelan crude to US refineries and attract American investments in Venezuela’s oil industry. Such access is viewed as a potential means to address rising gasoline prices and replenish the US strategic petroleum reserves.

Reports surfaced earlier this week indicating that the US was in advanced negotiations for direct stakes in several major Venezuelan oil fields, suggesting that potential investments from American energy firms could amount to billions of dollars. This aspect of the deal underscores its potential significance in reshaping energy ties between the two nations.

Nevertheless, the agreement has sparked concerns among some factions of Venezuela’s opposition. Critics are questioning the extent of US involvement in the country’s energy resources, reflecting a degree of unease about foreign influence over Venezuela’s oil sector. As US energy companies prepare to make potential investments, more information regarding the agreement’s ownership structure and the participating companies is anticipated to be revealed.
