Sheinbaum Enhances Business Ties to Spur Mexico’s Economic Growth

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is actively engaging with both domestic and international businesses to stimulate economic growth and bolster investor confidence in the country. This initiative has advanced over 20 investment projects worth around $3.75 billion this year, primarily focusing on the electricity sector, as reported by Mexico’s Business Coordinating Council. The government is playing a crucial role in facilitating partnerships with companies and removing investment barriers.

In a recent meeting with Mexican and American business leaders and US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson, Sheinbaum discussed strengthening bilateral economic relations and exploring investment opportunities in industries such as semiconductors, railways, financial services, and medical devices. The discussions also touched on trade relations, tariffs, and the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Following the meeting, Sheinbaum announced a significant investment from Nestlé, which plans to invest $2 billion in Mexico over her six-year term.

The Mexican government is increasingly relying on private capital to support economic activity while aiming to reduce the fiscal deficit. The economy grew by a modest 0.8% in 2025, with projections for 2026 ranging between 1% and 2%. Foreign direct investment reached nearly $35 billion in the first half of the year, though domestic private investment remains the larger share of overall investment. Through its Plan México initiative, the government seeks to attract more than 5.6 trillion pesos in combined public and private investment by 2030, targeting strategic sectors like energy and transportation.

To facilitate these investment goals, legislative changes are being pursued to improve access to financing and credit, with the hope of encouraging businesses to embark on new projects and enhance Mexico’s productive capacity. However, economic analysts caution that uncertainties surrounding US trade policy, potential tariffs, and the upcoming USMCA review could deter large-scale investment. Additional concerns include regulatory changes, legal certainty, and access to water, which continue to influence business decisions.

Despite these challenges, recent investment figures have shown positive signs. Mexico’s gross fixed capital formation increased by 6% year-on-year in July, while private investment rose by 5.9%, indicating increased economic activity. Nevertheless, analysts warn that a single month of growth does not establish a sustained recovery in investor confidence.

The economic outlook for Mexico will partly depend on its ability to maintain strong commercial ties with the United States and Canada while addressing domestic investment barriers. The Sheinbaum administration is betting that closer engagement with businesses, improved financing opportunities, and expedited project approvals will pave the way for economic growth and attract further capital.
