Sheinbaum Reports Advancements in Mexico-US Trade Agreement Discussions

Mexico and the United States are advancing towards a new trade agreement, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The announcement follows a recent phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, which Sheinbaum described as productive, though she emphasized that a final agreement has not yet been reached.

The discussions are part of ongoing efforts related to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), with specific focus on contentious issues such as tariffs on Mexican automobiles, steel, and aluminum. The dialogue marks an important step in addressing these trade concerns, pivotal for both nations’ economic interests.

President Sheinbaum noted that she has communicated with President Trump 22 times since January 2025, indicating a robust channel of communication between the two leaders. Typically, details of these conversations are disclosed only after concrete agreements are finalized, she added.

While this recent conversation centered solely on trade, Sheinbaum clarified that other critical topics like security and drug trafficking are being handled separately within the broader scope of bilateral relations. The exclusion of these issues underscores the distinct focus of the current negotiations.

Both countries are continuing to engage in dialogue as they seek to resolve outstanding trade issues. The negotiations are poised to influence the economic landscape in North America, with potential implications for industries reliant on cross-border trade.
