Middle East Tensions Push Brent Crude to Five-Month High Amid Supply Concerns

Global oil prices surged as Brent crude reached its highest point in over five months due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The increase comes amid heightened concerns about potential disruptions to energy supplies following Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia. Brent crude futures climbed 0.7% to $113.96 per barrel, after peaking at $114.72, the highest since May 4. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude saw a rise of 1.1% to $100.57 per barrel.

The market’s apprehension intensified following reports that Saudi Aramco evacuated its headquarters in Dhahran in response to the escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Yemen-based Houthi forces. Analysts have cautioned that further attacks could lead to significant interruptions in oil shipments, exacerbating supply shortages. The ongoing conflict has also raised alarms regarding the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, an essential shipping route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Prolonged disruptions in this area could delay energy deliveries and sustain high oil prices.

Further compounding supply concerns are developments in Libya, where the closure of a pipeline valve that connects the Hamada and Tahara oilfields to the Zawiya port has curtailed production at both fields. These incidents add to the mounting pressures on the global energy market, which is grappling with uncertain shipping routes, volatile oil flows, and increased freight costs.

In a bid to alleviate fuel-price pressures, Russia has agreed to resume diesel exports to international markets, including the United States. A Malta-flagged tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian diesel is currently en route to New York.

Oil markets are expected to remain highly sensitive to developments in the Middle East, particularly in terms of the extent of shipping disruptions and the time required to restore affected energy operations. The situation underscores the fragile balance of global energy supply and the potential for further volatility in oil prices.
