During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is aware of its internal challenges and is actively addressing them, stating that her government does not require external judgment.
Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of the United States’ role in tackling issues related to drug trafficking, money laundering, illegal arms flows, and drug consumption. She questioned what measures the U.S. government is implementing to prosecute drug traffickers operating across the border and prevent the illegal flow of weapons into Mexico.
The Mexican president acknowledged the severity of drug production and trafficking issues but underscored that these problems entail shared responsibilities between the two nations. She pointed out that the illegal flow of firearms from the United States significantly enhances the firepower of criminal organizations in Mexico.
In response to Trump’s calls for more decisive action against officials allegedly linked to drug cartels, Sheinbaum defended her administration’s record. She stated that Mexican authorities have consistently prosecuted officials with suspected ties to criminal organizations when evidence is present, irrespective of political affiliations. She mentioned Operation Swarm, a security initiative aimed at dismantling criminal and corruption networks, as evidence of Mexico’s commitment to law enforcement.
Sheinbaum concluded by urging greater transparency regarding U.S. efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and address domestic drug consumption. She advocated for a bilateral examination of responsibilities in addressing the cross-border drug crisis, emphasizing that both countries need to collaborate more effectively to resolve these complex issues.
