Trump Attacks NATO on Iran, Says Alliance Showed Its True Colors

President Donald Trump went on the offensive against NATO on Tuesday, declaring that the alliance had shown its true colors by refusing to support the US-Israel military campaign against Iran. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said most allied nations had communicated their intention to stay out of the operation, and he accused them of taking a “foolish” position. His tone at the Oval Office was no less pointed, with Trump telling reporters he was “deeply disappointed.”
The US has been at the center of NATO’s security framework since the alliance’s founding, contributing more financially than any other member state. Trump has argued throughout his career that this level of investment entitles America to greater loyalty from its partners. The events surrounding the Iran campaign have, in his view, proven otherwise.
Trump described the results of the joint US-Israel operation as an unambiguous military success. He stated that Iran’s navy, air force, radar systems, and anti-aircraft defenses had been eliminated during the campaign. He further claimed that Iranian leadership had been wiped out at virtually every significant level, ending what he called a persistent and dangerous threat.
The implications of these claims, if confirmed, would extend well beyond the immediate military confrontation. A weakened Iran without effective military capacity or leadership would reshape alliances and rivalries across the entire Middle East. Trump presented this as a victory that history would remember.
For NATO, the episode represents a pivotal test of its internal cohesion and its relationship with the United States. Member states will need to consider carefully how they engage with Washington in the aftermath of this public rebuke. The alliance’s long-term viability may depend on how it navigates the current storm.
